Christmas at the Fairmont fundraiser slated Dec. 8
“Christmas at the Fairmont — Dining with the Chefs” is set from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8. The event, which features entrees and desserts prepared by 20 top West Hawaii chefs and confectioners, kicks off with the lighting of hotel’s Christmas tree.
Participating chefs and confectioners include Hubert Des Marais of The Fairmont Orchid; Peter Pahk of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel; Clayton Arakawa of The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows; James Babian of Four Seasons Resort Hualalai; David Abrahams of Red Water Cafe; Stennis Hirayama of Tommy Bahama’s; Ken Schloss of Huggo’s; Nancy Edney of Tropical Dreams Ice Cream; and Cathy Smoot Barrett of Kailua Candy Co.
Chefs use primarily locally sourced ingredients to prepare cuisine accompanied by handcrafted ales, wines and 100 percent Kona coffee. Gingerbread houses, the work of local culinary students under the direction of pastry instructor Fernand Guiot, are displayed during the event; attendees vote for their favorite edible edifice.
The Kohala Quartet will provide live jazz music for the event, which also includes live and silent auctions.
The event benefits local culinary scholarships and the Equip the Kitchens campaign for the future Hawaii Community College, Palamanui campus. Tickets cost $85 and are available at konakohalachefs.org. They are also sold at Kona Wine Market, Clark Realty Kona and Kailua Candy Co. ‘Mouse House’
on display at HPA
A miniature Christmas village created by Martha Greenwell is on display at the Isaacs Art Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy through Jan. 5.
Affectionately known as “The Mouse House,” the village made its first Big Island appearance in December 2005 at the Kona Historical Society. Artifacts featured in the display are from the attic and tool shed of Frank and Violet Greenwell of Palani Ranch.
“Having ‘The Mouse House’ at the Isaacs Art Center during the extended holiday season has become an important tradition, and a time when we welcome keiki of all ages to experience Martha Greenwell’s magical creation,” said Gaylord Dillingham, center director.
The art center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday; admission is free. The center will be closed between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
